Secure VPS Hosting Checklist

Upgrading to a VPS gives you total control over your server environment, but with that power comes the responsibility of security. Unlike managed shared hosting, an unmanaged VPS leaves the server hardening entirely up to you. Failing to secure it can lead to data breaches and compromised applications.

1. Change Default SSH Port and Disable Root Login

Hackers use automated bots to constantly scan port 22 (the default SSH port) for vulnerabilities. Change this to a custom port immediately. Furthermore, never log in as 'root'. Create a new user with sudo privileges and disable direct root login in your SSH configuration.

2. Implement SSH Key Authentication

Passwords can be brute-forced. SSH keys cannot. Generate an SSH key pair, add the public key to your server, and configure SSH to strictly reject password authentication. This ensures that only users possessing the physical private key file can access the server.

3. Configure a Robust Firewall (UFW)

Your server should deny all incoming traffic by default. Install UFW (Uncomplicated Firewall) and explicitly allow only the ports you absolutely need (e.g., HTTP/80, HTTPS/443, and your custom SSH port).

4. Automated Updates and Monitoring

Outdated software is the number one cause of security breaches. Enable unattended-upgrades to ensure critical security patches are applied automatically. Additionally, install Fail2Ban to monitor log files and automatically block IP addresses exhibiting malicious behavior.
